Putting a fresh twist on the ancient art of karaoke, Hip-Hop Karaoke lets you get on the mic and act out your rap fantasies to the fullest, whether that includes teaming up with friends to rock through a Wu-Tang jam, giving a new gender twist to a Salt-N-Pepa standard, living the lyrical highlife like Jay-Z, celebrating summertime with Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince or acting all crazy like ODB.  HHK now is now five years old and going from strength to strength with each event, to mark the special occasion we are going weekly in September with the crew taking over every Thursday down Little Portland Street.

With over 150 songs to choose from, the night’s hosts ensure that the entertainment flows smoothly and in good spirits. The Hip-Hop Karaoke set-up includes everything that an authentic hip-hop live show does, including show deejay and event organiser Rob Pursey (www.southernhospitality.co.uk) spinning instrumental vinyl versions for people to rhyme over and lyrical help when needed! All of this, with the added bonus of a cravat-wearing compere, the incomparable and now legendary Marc Choice and London legend Bobby Champagne Jnr. on the mic.

Hip Hop Karaoke is based around regular events at The Social (www.thesocial.com) where for 5 years running, each and every event has been a roadblock and has seen many an amateur and more than a few celebs and semi-pros try their hand. Hip Hop Karaoke has also performed at Glastonbury four years running, Bestival in ’08 and ’09, as well as Lovebox Weekender, Gatecrasher Summer Sound System and many more.

After more than a decade of one-off nights and monthly parties, we’ve decided to hand over each and every Friday night to just one person*.  Ross Allen has been in and around The Social and its spiritual predecessors from the beginning, way back up the top of Portland Street at The Albany.  It’s an oft-repeated cliché that Ross is a DJ’s DJ, but that is only half the story.  He plays great music and has made a career out of knowing what is good and what people will like.  Despite working for numerous labels (Filter / Casual / Island Blue / Domino) he’s never lost the love whilst working on projects as varied as the amazing Country Got Soul series to Peshay via Spacek and Yo Majesty, Pay-As-U-Cartel and The Sugababes.

You might know The Meltdown as Ross’s brilliant radio show on Ministry. It's a two hour guide to 12 inches old and new, album tracks, B-sides, remixes and the latest singles about to hit proper records shops. The Social Meltdown will play the very best old and new records, all shot through with funk, bass and soul.  It will showcase all that is exciting and interesting every Friday night. It'll be a place to come and drink and enjoy music. It’s going to be musical but most of all it'll be fun.

We hope that we are taking a step back to The Social’s roots with this weekly party - a Friday night session that it seems the West End has lost in recent years. It'll be a reason not to get herded east or west when the sun sets, a reason to stay rooted on the dancefloor with an open mind and a drink in hand.  It's going to be essential. See you on there.

Oxford based promoters Pindrop Performances take on IllFit with a bill of drone folk, acoustic arkestras and lo fi pop at it's best. Four Quartets marry Sparklehorse indie with a poetic lyricism all of their own, David G. Cox blends Tom Waitsian thunder and Spiritualised melodicism in equal measure, Oxford's The Gullvers shimmer and sparkle their way through an excellent repertoire of lo fi indie pop joy and expansive folk arkestra We Aeronauts take on Belle and Sebastian tweecore with a harder, post Broken Social Scene edge. A fantastic bill of music that's topped off with Pindrop + guest DJs TBA.

We present Brighton based, indie-post punk band Shrag. They mix an exhilarating blend of dirty, distorted post-punk guitars, shouty boy/girl vocals and fantastic pop songs. In the few years they’ve been together, the band have toured on both sides of the Atlantic, released their debut album to loving reviews, recorded Beeb sessions for Marc Reilly, Tom Robinson and Huw Stephens, as well as being endorsed by Artrocker, NME and Pitchfolk. Plus been tour support for The Cribs (twice!). Shrag release their huge anticipation 2nd album Life! Death! Prizes! In Oct.
